Both Fiona and I had to take full medicals before Christmas; fasting blood tests, full check-ups and inspections and then finally a running machine. I am not familiar with these machines on a regular basis (preferring to walk our six dogs around the Estate every day) but the fact that my ancient trainers were the same age as the running machine operator was of much amusement to us both. The result by the way…we were both passed fit with Fiona far fitter than I!

Established in 1836 Derby Museum is a font of knowledge and artefacts pertaining to our county and the region as a whole. As a patron of the Friends of Derby Museums I was fortunate enough to attend the Christmas soiree that included jazz and refreshments amidst the plethora of Royal Crown Derby objects and Joseph Wright paintings and portraits. The Friends group runs a series of meetings and lectures throughout the year in conjunction with the Museums. Why not pop along and view the latest exhibitions when you are next in the City or , even better join the Friends group and get to see behind the scenes?

News that Wirksworth is to have a cinema for the first time in forty five years has been greeted with delight in the town. Local couple Paul Carr and Esther Patterson have had a dream to open their own cinema for some time and plans for their conversion of the former Westons’ electrical store on North End were approved at the January Derbyshire Dales planning committee. The site will house a cinema with 52 seats alongside a bar and eating area. The seats have been ‘reclaimed’ from Darlington Civic Theatre complete with vintage fabric and will give the space an aura of the 1940s and 50s.The Cinema will show an eclectic mix of films from blockbusters to art house films as well as children’s classics. Customers are also invited to email in with their favourite films for future showings. The glamour of the big screen is about to be brought back to Wirksworth.

Eyam Hall is about to undergo a seamless metamorphosis. In an interesting and most unusual development the National Trust are going into partnership with the Wright family(who have lived there for over three hundred years) and the first shoots of this new venture are the planning applications that have been submitted to the National Park. Under the name ‘The National Trust@Eyam’ the owners of Eyam Hall, the Wrights, will lease the Hall and Craft Centre to the National Trust, for a 10 year period beginning March 2013. The Trust will manage a visitor operation at Eyam Hall, displaying the chattels and telling the story of the Wright family. The move is unusual in that it is a ‘first’ for the National Trust and they to use their expertise to present the story and market the Hall and increase access to a major heritage asset in our historic county. It will be a fascinating, and hopefully productive, collaboration to follow over the next few years.

Rockandfell have developed a new concept in walking, The Gourmet Walk Event.  The event takes place in the White Peak area of the Peak District National Park, where 150 clients will arrive to spend a day enjoying and learning about this unique landscape.

The day will start with a series of guided walks of varying grades, easy, moderate and hard.  All walks will be lead by experienced and knowledgeable guides who are experts in bringing the countryside alive for the enjoyment of the clients.

In the evening clients are the guests of Sir Richard FitzHerbert at his home Tissington Hall, a 15^th Century stately home set in the heart of the medieval village of Tissington.  There clients will enjoy a 3 course Gourmet Meal in the surroundings of the beautiful grounds.

To complete the evening Mark Richards, the foremost guide book author will be talking about his life as a writer and walker in the Peak District, Lake District and beyond.
